Our Flagship, Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL) and Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC (TTE) collectively account for 4% and 5% of Sri Lanka’s tea and rubber production respectively. The two companies cover 44 Tea and Rubber estates with a land extent of almost 19,500 hectares. As industry pioneers, we’ve raised the bar to integrate sustainable practices into the business process and joined forces with external parties such as the Rain Forest Alliance to reinforce the sustainable approach. Tea varieties from the two plantation companies are well known for the distinct flavour, which is maintained through consistency in quality and the strict adherence to food safety standards and environment, social ethical compliance. Furthermore, Hayleys Plantations is world most awarded and certified sustainable plantations on environment friendly, human care and social conscious ethical business.


Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL) was incorporated as a regional plantation company in June 1992, as a preliminary to the privatization of the then State-owned segment of the plantation industry. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dipped Products PLC a leading manufacturer of hand protection wear worldwide. Kelani Valley plantations comprises 25 estates spanning three distinct agro-climatic regions spanning over 13,000 hectares of tea, rubber, coconut, cinnamon and agro-forestry plantations.

All of KVPL’s black tea factories are ISO 22000:2005 certified, and its tea plantations are accredited with Rainforest Alliance certification. Additionally being compliant with the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) certifies the Company’s commitment to good agricultural practices with highly stringent adherence to environmental best practices, while signifying a responsible approach to augmenting ethical business practices in worker safety and health and preservation of bio-diversity within the plantations.

In addition, the Company’s Glassaugh factory produces green tea, while KVPL’s Nuwara Eliya factory specializes in the production of instant tea. KVPL’s two Tea Centers – the Pedro Estate Ethical Tea Boutique in Nuwara Eliya as well as the newly-launched ‘Tea Train’ at Edinburgh Estate in Nanuoya add considerable brand value to KVPL’s credentials as a leading tea manufacturer in the country.

The rubber plantations too have been endorsed by Forest Stewardship Council Certified Producers of sole crepe, centrifuge latex and crepe rubber. Designed to uplift the quality of life of our people in all aspects, a unique multi-dimensional initiative branded as “A Home for Every Plantation Worker” was launched in 2006 and has been featured at the UNGC Network Conference in Mexico in 2017.

Mabroc Teas (Pvt) Ltd., our tea marketing company which is a fully owned subsidiary of KVPL, has a reach of over 50 countries and together with KVPL became a signatory to the UN Global Compact, a member of the UNGC Charter and launched the unique Single Origin Tea from select garden marks. It was recognized as ‘The First Ethical Tea Brand of the World’ for honoring the four main principles of UNGC; Human Rights, Labor Standards, Environment and Anti- Corruption.

Pursuing a policy of diversification into other complementary business models, in 2003 Kalupahana Power Company (Pvt) Ltd. was established to generate a 01 MW hydro power plant. The most recent addition to this area of business was a solar plant of 165 kWP in Dewalakanda Estate.

 The picturesque Oliphant Bungalow Luxury boutique resort in Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by lush tea plantations and has expanded KVPL’s portfolio into the leisure sector with the incorporation of Kelani Valley Resorts (Pvt) Ltd. in 2017.

The continuous search for excellence is reflected in KVPL’s operational practices and the numerous subscriptions to non-regulatory concepts of ethical business management and internationally recognized accreditations. The Company’s present position in the industry is a testimony to the spirit of innovation and the commitment demonstrated by the 9,500 strong team, led by a closely-knit management collective. Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC produces high quality black tea in sixteen tea gardens situated in the best tea growing areas in both high and low grown regions. Twelve of the estates are within the NuwaraEliya district while the rest are situated in Deniyaya and Galle in the south.

We produce quality green tea in Radella. Amongst TTEL’s rich product portfolio are some of the top Dimbulla marks such as Mattakelle, Somerset, Great Western, Bearwell, Holyrood and Wattegodde. Kiruwanaganga from Deniyaya is the flagship mark amongst low grown estates. Our focus on quality and product differentiation enabled the company to rank No 1 RPC at the Auctions for both high and low grown categories in 2018 and 2019.

TTEL pioneered the “Food Factory” concept in the industry and achieved the first HACCP Certification at Great Western in 2001. In Jan 2006, TTEL achieved the first ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management Systems certification reinforcing its Quality leadership. Since then, most factories have achieved ISO 22000:2005 certification.

TTEL achieved ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management Standard for the Great Western Estate for the first time among the Regional Plantations Company. Furthermore, Bearwell and Holyrood Estates also certified under ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental Management Standard. It is consistent with the organization’s environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management system include; enhancement of environmental performance; fulfilment of compliance obligations and achievement of environmental objectives. TTEL Great Western Estate received ISO 9001: 2015 standard that used for ensure and demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet buyer/ customer and regulatory requirements and to demonstrate continuous improvement. TTEL is Holyrood estate certified under ISO 50001:2011 Energy Management Standard as a first tea factory in Sri Lanka. This sets out the framework to adopt an effective energy management system.

TTEL achieved the certification for Good Manufacturing Practices which is a system for ensuring out products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks involved in any pharmaceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product.

TTEL always practice sustainable plantation practises. Certifications for Sustainable Plantations are rigorous set of environmental, social and economic criteria that align, promote and ensure sustainability agriculture and manufacturing practices within the all estates. TTEL received Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Network certification for 14 estates which advocates best management practices in agricultural and manufacturing operations to mitigate environmental and social risks. TTEL also achieved the Ethical Tea Partnership for 14 estates that guides tea producers to adopt globally accepted social and environmental best practises and standards. TTEL achieved UTZ certification program that enables farmers to learn better farming methods, improve working conditions and take better care of their children and the environment.

TTEL have number of active partnerships with different national and international sustainable development platform in various aspects such as Biodiversity Sri Lanka and Science Based Target initiatives. TTEL also work with UN Sudtainble development Goals, UN Global Compact Principles, UN women’s empowerment principles and the CEO water mandate, which are related to sustainability and security with water stewardship.
