The Hayleys relief efforts
were a result of the spirit, the commitment and contributions of
employees, of business associates, overseas partners and friends of
Hayleys. These efforts gathered momentum in the immediate aftermath of
the December 26th, 2004 catastrophe and their result is summarized
below. |
A special unit was set up to coordinate and monitor the group’s Tsunami
relief work, headed by a Director of Operations, who was specially
contracted for the purpose. His expertise on logistics management
ensured more efficient and effective implementation of the work we
undertook. Our short term and intermediary relief efforts were
categorized as PHASE I whilst PHASE II is the medium- term project to
construct a school.
Our
flagship project - a new school for the children of Kathaluwa in
Ahangama, Galle
|
As a light drizzle
cooled its terraced lawns on Thursday, May 18, the school opened
its doors to its first batch of students, who had spent four and
a half terms in makeshift sheds and an assembly hall of an
adjacent school, as they watched it take shape.
Consisting of 34,000
square feet of building space, the new school has 15 classrooms
each capable of accommodating up to 40 children, two computer
rooms with 10 computers, a laboratory, a library, assembly hall,
rooms for music, dancing and art, a toy room, a sick room,
counselling room, the principal’s office, administration office,
teachers’ meeting room, playground, children’s park and toilets,
with all utilities such as water, power supply and access roads. |
